A masterpiece of Henrik Ibsen, ‘A Doll’s House,’ was recreated by the young theatre artists of the city. The play was performed on Friday at Shaheed Bhavan auditorium. Directed by Priya Bhadauriya, the play was performed by the artists of Rang Sagar Drama Troupe, Bhopal.
Ibsen’s masterpiece is about Nora and her struggle of being a good wife, a good mother. Nora Helmer is happily married to Torvald, a lawyer who is about to take over the post of director of the Joint Stock Bank. But, the ‘Happily ever after’ image broke down, when reality of relationships enters the picture.
Nora and Torvald have three small children. Nora has a secret to keep, however, early in their marriage Torvald became seriously ill and the doctors advised a stay in a more southerly climate.
Nora had to get hold of the money for the journey in
secrecy and so borrowed it from Krogstad, a lawyer who was Torvald’s fellow-student. As security for the loan she forged her dying father's signature.
When Krogstag tries to threaten her and tell the
truth to Torvald, Nora thinks Torvald will stand by her no matter what. But, Nora has begun to understand that her marriage is not what she thought it was.
In course of a dramatic conversation with Torvald she decides that her most important and only task is to go out into the world on her own to be herself ending up leaving her husband and children.
Interestingly, the entire team performing the play was all about the youngsters with least experience. In spite of this, the young artists managed to woo the theatre buffs with their performance.
Priya, who debuted her theatre career as a director with A Doll’s House told The Pioneer, “For past four years II have been thinking about A Doll’s House and to stage it as my directorial debut. Finally, I managed to do it and I am extremely overwhelmed.”
