Hemodialysis on dog for first time in Bhopal

Hemodialysis was performed on a dog named Bruno on Wednesday for the first time in the State capital. The advanced Hemo Dialyser has been introduced in the State, for an advanced dialysis among the dogs.

Hemodialysis is a procedure which enables the removal metabolic solute and fluid waste from the blood. The dialysis machine pumps blood through an extracorporeal circuit where it passes through a semi-permeable membrane called a dialyzer. Dissolved solutes like urea and other toxins, diffuse through the dialyzer membrane and out of the blood. The purified blood is then returned back to the patient. The duration of the dialysis treatment and amount of toxin removed is tailored to each patient and the severity of the patient's disease process.

Acute uremia is the most common indication for hemodialysis in dogs and cats. Hemodialyis should be considered when the clinical consequences of acute uremia cannot be effectively managed with medical therapy alone.

A labrador, Bruno was examined with the Hemo Dialyzer on Wednesday.  The owner of Bruno Aakash said, “Bruno was becoming dull day by day and he was also not taking his diet properly and so he had vomiting sensations and suffered with weight loss. In such case Dr Tiwari examined him with Hemodialysis.” He further said, “He was much depressed for a long time and I was taking him to the clinic for the treatment. After this dialysis I am eagerly waiting to see a change in him.”

Veterinarian Dr Mukesh Tiwari has introduced the technology here at his clinic. Unfortunately, this technology is rare in the country and also was not available even in the veterinary Colleges of Madhya Pradesh.

Notably, the vets across the country are seeing rising rates of renal failure in dogs and so it became a matter of concern for the city dog lovers as well.

While talking to The Pioneer, Dr Tiwari said, “For past one year I have been noticing an increase rate of renal failures in dogs of the city. So, I was much concerned about the better treatment of the unhealthy dogs.”

Dr Tiwari attended four-day training in a Vet College of Chennai where he learned the facts and advantages of the dialyzer. He said, “Earlier I used to treat the patient dogs with the Peritoneal Dialysis which is an older form and it would take much time in treatment. But, with Hemodialysis it has become an easy task for the patient animal to get a better treatment.”
