HC bats for rain harvesting in Gwalior

Published on:

Rainwater harvesting is a very reliable way to conserve water for the purpose of using it during periods of water scarcity. The observation by the Gwalior Bench of the High Court came while hearing the Compliance Report of the Municipal Corporation on the implementation of rainwater harvesting system in the city.

The High Court further observed that a water insecure place like Gwalior will greatly benefit from rainwater harvesting systems.

Earlier, the Gwalior Municipal Corporation in its Compliance Report had informed the High Court that it had started water harvesting at 70 places in the city.

Its counsel also informed the court that the civic body has plans to initiate water harvesting in more places.

However the High Court was not impressed with the civic body’s efforts for water conservation so far and observed that a lot more can be done to make sure that the city doesn’t suffer from water scarcity in the future.

The High Court further directed the Municipal Corporation to create facility of rooftop water harvesting on government as well as private buildings.

The court observed that the harvesting system will prevent water from flowing away and instructed the civic body to strictly follow specific instructions to conserve water and submit a report by September. Justice Sanjay Yadav, during the hearing informed the civic body counsel that water harvesting is being successfully carried out in the High Court premises.

Meanwhile, thanks to the heavy rains in the region during the past few days, the Tigra Dam, the sole fresh water reservoir in the city has enough water to last till February, next year.

The water level in the dam has risen to 727.50 feet and currently the reservoir has 5961.6 Crore liters water.

However, the MET department has cautioned that currently the city is not under the effects of the active monsoon system and chances of rains in the coming days are very less. The department further said that the system will once again become active in August bringing with it heavy rains.
