Haj pilgrims allowed to take relatives

Published on:

The pilgrims selected for Haj-2016 can take close female relatives with them, including paternal and maternal grandmother, wife, daughter, granddaughter etc. For this, Ministry of External Affairs has allotted 200 seats to Haj Committee of India. The women who have not applied for Haj-2016, but their Mahram (close relative) has been selected and is desirous of pilgrimage may apply by May 23. If number of applications exceeds 200, selection will be done by Haj Committee of India through draw of lot.

Further information about this can be obtained from website of Madhya Pradesh State Haj Committee www.mphajcommittee.com and Haj Committee of India www.hajcommittee.com.

Applicant will have to specify why she has not applied for Haj-2016. Besides, certificate about relationship with Mahram, reason for journey, age certificate, details of Mahram and Ghair-Mahram relatives in family etc. would also be given.

As per Islamic law, a lady cannot undertake pilgrimage unless accompanied by a Sharai Mahram. There are cases where a lady pilgrim who wants to perform Haj is left out due to non-availability of passport, not applying within specified time etc and her only Mahram has got selected for Haj-2016. In such cases, the female intending pilgrim needs to be included in the Cover of her selected Mahram, as otherwise, she may not be able to perform Haj in subsequent years for want of Mahram.

Therefore, Ministry of External Affairs, has allocated a quota of 200 Haj scats to be utilized to include such lady pilgrims in the Covers of already-confirmed Mahram pilgrims.

Haj Application Form (HAF) for selection in this category may be submitted by eligible lady pilgrims to their respective State or Union Territory Haj Committee on or before May 23, in no case shall the last date be extended for submission of HAF in this category.
