District Collector Ashok Varma on Monday conducted a surprise inspection of the Morar Government Maternity Hospital. Arriving at the hospital around 9 in the morning, the Collector, along with ADM Shivraj Varma went around the maternity ward to take stock of the patients’ condition there.
According to sources, he was appalled to note some serious flaws, especially related to the vaccination of newborns and breast feeding.
During his inspection tour of about 45 minutes the collector admonished the medical staff for the laxity in vaccinating the newborn babies and cautioned them against any future negligence in this matter. The excuse by the medical staff that Sunday being a holiday, some of the medical staff was absent, and hence the delay in vaccinating the babies did not go well with the collector. He directed the Medical Supernatant to make sure that enough medical staff is available even on holidays.
The Collector also instructed the hospital authorities to organize training for doctors and nurses so that they can create awareness about the benefits of breast feeding. Talking to the medical staff he said that mother’s milk is the ideal nutrition for a baby and it is important to create awareness about it.
The collector was also furious to see a few medical staff including practitioners were either absent or had come late to work. Taking a serious note of the matter he ordered the impounding and sealing of the attendance register. The register has since been referred to the Tl meeting for appropriate action.
The collector and the ADM also visited the pharmacy, pediatrics ward, general ward and the emergency ward and met with the patients and the medical staff.
