Gwalior city registers spike in road accidents

Gwalior city registered a significant increase in the number of road accidents in the first half of 2018 compared to last years. This rise in the number of road accidents in the city is fuelled mainly by drunken rash driving and over speeding.

The ever-increasing number of vehicles and the corresponding poor traffic and road infrastructure, along with the growing tendency among motorists to violate traffic rules are some of the other major contributing factors for this increase in accidents.

According to sources in the traffic police department the city has seen five accidents a day on an average, out of which one has been fatal, leading to death of the victim.

Nitish and Krunal Yadav, both engineering students and aged around twenty were seriously injured after the bike in which they were travelling skidded and went under a moving bus. The accident occurred near the Silver Estate in City Centre yesterday evening.

The passers -by informed the police and the ambulance and both were taken to the nearby hospital. Nitish who came under the back wheel of the bus is in a critical condition while Krunal has a fractured leg.

In another incident, a youth by name Somesh Sharma was run over by a speeding truck while crossing the road near the main market yesterday afternoon. He is admitted in the hospital and his condition too is stated to be critical.

Speaking to the media persons, Navneet Bhasin, the Gwalior SP said that the increase in the number of road accidents can be attributed to the general indiscipline shown by motorists, including drunken driving, reckless and high speed driving and jumping traffic signals. He added that the city police are running a campaign to apprehend such culprits who are responsible for road accidents.

He also said that the police have already prepared a list of 1200 people who are habitual traffic rules violators and procedures will soon be initiated to cancel their licenses.  The SP also said that the focus will be on educating people about the need to follow traffic rules and stricter enforcement of traffic rules.
