In what seemed like a scene straight out of a Hollywood blockbuster, an ambulance carrying liver of a dead person passed through `green corridor' formed in the city and covered a distance of 10 kms in just 8 minutes to reach Devi Ahilyabai Holkar airport, from where the liver was transported to Delhi for its transplantation on a patient hospitalised at Medanta Hospital, Gurgaon.

The entire operation for non-stop transportation of the organ from the Choitram Hospital to Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport, Indore was coordinated by district

commissioner, Sanjay Dubey along with city police and traffic police.

For an uninterrupted transportation of liver,  the district administration with  the help of 60 city cops, created green corridor from Choithram hospital to city airport via  Manikbgah, Palsikar crossing, Hemu colony, Mhow Naka, Gangwal and Bada Ganpti by stopping traffic movement at all the traffic junctions falling on the route, said Indore divisional commissioner Sanjay Dube.

He told The Pioneer that creation of `green corridor'  enabled ambulance carrying liver to reach Devi Ahilyabai Holkar airport in just eight minutes, which in normal condition could have taken more than 40 minutes.

Dube who thoroughly monitored the life-saving mission, said the ambulance left Choithram hospital at 12.02 pm and reached Indore airport at 12.10 pm from where it was airlifted to Delhi by Jet Airways flight at 12.20 pm.

"The liver was retrieved from the body of one Rameshwar Khere (40) at Choithram Hospital where he had been declared brain dead by the hospital doctors at 1020 hours. Khere, a native of Bhikhangaon in Khargone district, had met with an accident sometime back and was undergoing treatment at Choithram hospital for the past few days.

Soon after he was declared brain dead, the family members of the deceased decided to donate his liver, said Dr Pradeep Salgiya of Choitram hospital. Following enquiries by doctors, two receivers for the livers were identified at Medanta hospital, Gurgaon.

Subsequently kin of the deceased as well as the hospital administration of Choithram hospital talked to local administration apprising them the need of immediate transportation of liver from Indore to Medanta hospital Gurgaon for its   transplantation into patients there.

Responding swiftly to the request of family members and hospital administration, divisional commissioner Dube directed the district administration and police administration to create `green corridor' for transportation of liver from Choithram hospital to Devi Ahilyabai hospital airport.

It was for the first time in Madhya Pradesh that a green corridor was created for a life-saving mission.
