Govt sacks jailer, deputy jailer

Taking cognisance of the state of affairs in jails, the Uttar Pradesh government has dismissed a jailer and a deputy jailer from service with immediate effect.

Former jailer of Baghpat jail, Uday Pratap Singh, during whose tenure sharpshooter Prem Prakash alias Munna Bajrangi was shot dead by another jail inmate Sunil Rathi on July 9, 2018, has been sacked from service.

Besides, deputy jailer of Meerut jail, Dhirendra Kumar Singh, has also been dismissed from service after a sting operation by a private news channel showed how he provided facilities to prisoners after taking bribe on October 2, 2018.

Principal Secretary (Home) Arvind Kumar on Friday confirmed the termination of services of the two prison officials.

On Thursday, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had issued a stern message to officials that no laxity on the part of officers would be tolerated and they could be sacked.

In both these cases, investigating officers (IOs) carried out a threadbare probe and the charged officials were given a chance to place their side of the story. When they failed to defend themselves, the IOs recommended stringent action against them.

While the order sacking deputy jailer Dhirendra Kumar Singh was issued on June 6, the order for dismissal from service of jailer Uday Pratap Singh was issued on June 20. Both were under suspension after the incident surfaced.
