Govt introduces rules to open new colleges

Published on:

Probably for the first time in the history of Madhya Pradesh, the State Government has now ushered in rules and regulations for new  Government colleges and their infrastructure.

At present, the colleges having under-graduate and post-graduate courses are  opened only on the demands and requests from people’s representatives, but as the rules and regulations have been laid down, the Government would now open the colleges only if there is availability of students.

For the purpose, the Higher Education department has conducted a survey of the higher secondary schools in different regions, so that the passouts of these schools could be accommodated in the colleges.

Similarly, the department has fixed norms for laboratories in each government college and the funds would be allocated to them on the basis of strength of students in each stream of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, zoology etc.

Norms have also been laid down for the libraries in the government colleges. The department is working hard for converting the book stores into the libraries. Hassle-free libraries would soon be witnessed in the colleges, allowing the students to have access to all the books and by selecting himself the book he liked, he would get it issued.

Commissioner, Higher Education department Umakant Umarao told ‘The Pioneer’ that he was making some improvements in the functioning of the government colleges and in the process such guidelines have been set.

He informed that the colleges are being provided with funds under centrally sponsored scheme Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) and different schemes of the State. Besides, soon, funds received from World Bank would be made available to the colleges for improvement in quality of higher education, he added.
