Rapid economic development and increasing wealth in households has led to higher vehicle ownership, causing peak hour chokes on almost all major roads of the city. Gwalior, with a total population of more than 18 lakhs has over 1 lakh four wheelers besides about 5 lakhs two wheelers. Around 3000 police personnel are stationed at the 34 key points in the city to regulate the traffic.

Speaking to the media persons, SP of Gwalior, Navneet Bhasin said that the Gwalior police will soon be introducing a set of measures to reduce the traffic congestion and ensure a smooth flow of traffic. Giving details, he said that a 3 layer plan is being introduced to effectively solve the traffic problems. He added that police personnel will be deployed at all key points during peak hours who will direct all vehicles parked alongside the roads to the nearest parking areas; the emphasis will be on traffic control and not issuing challans or collecting fines. He further said that very soon the city will be free of physical challans; instead e-challans will be issued to avoid unnecessary time delay and other public harassments. The SP added that staff of various government establishments will also be called for traffic management duty during peak hours.

Earlier the SP had asked the police personnel to stop harassing the public, especially women, students and senior citizens in the name of traffic checking. He had also put a stop to the practice of issuing challans for helmetless riding. The SP had further impressed upon the police the need to instead target anti-social elements, vehicles without number plates and riders with their faces concealed in pieces of cloth.
