Swami Vivekananda Institute of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Spine Centre (SVINNS) successfully performed first of its kind operation of epilepsy in the State.

While talking to media persons here on Saturday at the hospital premises, Pediatric Neurosurgeon Dr Gauri Pandit said that the patient was 16-year-old Aadish Jain hailed from Aagar in Ujjain district.

Aadish had come to him at SVINNS with a history of uncontrolled epilepsy. He used to get 8 to 10 fits/seizures per day and he was on continuous medicines.

After thorough evaluation, the experts at SVINNS decided to perform Anterior Temporal lobectomy with Amygdalohippocampectomy. Following surgery, the patient has made remarkable recovery and is now totally seizure-free. He continues to be on medication, which will be withdrawn over course of time.

Dr Pandit said that for the next six months Aadish would continue medication and gradually the medication would be ceased and later he would live a happy life without medicines.

Dr Gauri Pandit elaborated that social stigma related to epilepsy manifests itself among people living with this disorder in India, at the individual, familial, social and structural levels.

lack of awareness has made this disorder even more widespread. The treatment gap is responsible for the mild epilepsy turning chronic, which then becomes difficult to control. The cost of the surgery would be around `1.5 lakh but Dr Gauri said that not every patient could undergo surgery is depends on case to case basis.
