Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has said that the members of the State Assembly should make all efforts to provide relief to the farmers who are passing through a crisis of crop loss.

“At the time when the farmers are facing problems we should not indulge in any sort of politics and should come forth to serve the peasants,” he added. Chouhan was replying to the discussions on drought situation in the State in the State Assembly’s daylong special session convened on Thursday. He categorically said that there should be no politics over the suicide of farmers.

“The farmers would not be allowed to get defeated. All possible help would be provided to them,” he added. He stated that the situation of drought is pathetic this year in the State. The soyabean crop was expected better, but the whole crop was damaged.

Besides drought, the farmers also faced problems like excessive rains that damaged the crops. This caused reduction in crop production in the country and this is for the first time in the country that provisions have been made for survey on the basis of reduction in crop production, Chouhan informed the members.

He said the State Government is sensitive towards the farmers and thus regarding providing relief to them, this special session has been convened. Suicide by anybody is fateful, because human life is valuable. The cases related to suicide should not be associated with politics, as it would not help the farmers affected by the situation.

Chouhan told the House as how the BJP Government has increased the compensation of crop damage by manifolds in comparison to previous Congress regime. During the 10-year regime of the Congress, relief of only Rs 670 crore was provided to the farmers, but in the BJP rule, so far Rs 7,600 crore has been given, he added.

Besides providing financial relief to the farmers, Chouhan informed about the steps being taken in favour of the peasants to overcome the crisis.

After Chouhan’s reply, the second supplementary budget of Rs 8,407.24 cr was passed in the House unanimously.
