Heart failure is a chronic condition currently contributing to roughly 1.8 million hospitalisations annually in India. India alone also has more than 20% mortality rate, compared to global statistics. With these alarming numbers, experts have time and again emphasized how heart failure still remains as one of the most underrated and under-diagnosed heart conditions. As a result, the condition has been silently and rapidly killing patients and leading to repeated hospitalizations.
However, one must know that heart failure is not the end of the road. With proper cardiologist consultation and by following regular check-ups, heart failure patients can manage their condition better. Adhering to the prescribed course of treatments with suggested lifestyle modifications can help in effective management of heart failure and reduce the overall associated hospitalization, mortality, and morbidity.
Dr PC Manoria, Director & Head Department of Cardiology Manoria Heart & Critical Hospital, Bhopal said, "We see at least 20-30% of cases at an advanced stage, and there are less than 10-20% chances of survival at the last stage of this condition. Patient's poor adherence to treatment is a common barrier to effective heart failure management.
This non-adherence can lead to further complications, resulting in increased risk of rehospitalisations. We must also note that, human muscle cells is not provided with an endogenous capacity for repair. Therefore, prevention of heart failure should be emphasized across the population and Prevention of HF is indeed possible by better control of blood pressure, early intervention in congenital and valvular heart disease and early revascularization in CAD etc along with sticking to the prescribed treatment can help overall reduce hospitalisations and prolong the lifespan of patients enabling them to live healthier lives."
