On the occasion of World Tourism Day, on Saturday, Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya commenced two-day celebrations. An exhibition — Deshatan — on ‘Tourism and Community Development’ was inaugurated by Additional Director General of PIB PJ Sudhakar at Rock Art Shelter Exhibition of Manav Sangrahalaya.

Tourism all over the world largely relies on local heritage and cultural resources. The cultural wealth of India is not limited to its massive monuments and sites, but it is also about its natural landscape and the charm of everyday life including old house types, streets and markets, rituals and festivals, crafts, dances, music and traditional cuisine. Tourism fosters mutual understanding between nations and cultures and promotes cultural pluralism. India is renowned for the diversity and richness of its cultural heritage.

Before the exhibition a special presentation of ‘Sangidi-Rallu-Atta’ —demonstration of traditional stone weight lifting sport of Andhra Pradesh was demonstrated at Tribal Habitat, IGRMS. A nine-member team from Andhra Pradesh demonstrated the traditional weight lifting sport of south India. In this team the youngest member is 22 years and oldest of is 42 year old.  This sport is played on the festival of ‘Makara Sankranti’, fairs and other social occasions. Nowadays it is very hard to find any villages in this area. This traditional weight-lifting is a sport as well as a very good entertainment in the rural areas of Andhra Pradesh.

A cultural programme ‘Drums of India’ — a musical concert of classical and traditional presentation has been performed at Veethi Sankul Indoor Auditorium, IGRMS.
