Chairman of the Bhopal Poisonous Gas leakage Inquiry Commission Justice Sl Kochar has instructed the officials of the Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board (MPPCB) to examine the land and ground water of the Union Carbide factory besides the toxic waste kept in the premises of the factory.
The Commission has told the MPPCB officials to complete the said work by August 23.
Justice Kochar during his visit to the factory on Wednesday could not inspect the toxic waste kept in the godown. The reason for this was that the officials of the gas relief department failed to hand over the keys to the MPPCB besides not a single officer of the Bhopal gas tragedy and rehabilitation department was present on the occasion. Justice Kochar expressed displeasure over this attitude of the officials of the department.
Kochar during the inspection of the factory told the officials to destroy the toxic waste and to send it to the Ramky Enviro’s incinerator plant in Pithampur for the same. He told the officials that there were adequate measures for the same at the Ramky’s Pithampur plant that has already been inspected. The ground water and mud of the incinerator’s nearby areas have also been examined with the fear of getting them contaminated due to the burning of toxic waste there. Both the samples of the mud and water have been found free from any toxic chemicals.
Notably, earlier British, German and other countries had shown interest to incinerate the toxic waste but that was costing too high, so the Indian authorities decided that the toxic waste would be destroyed in the country only.
