The target of enrolling 2.21 crore members has become a problem for the Madhya Pradesh unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders.
Instead of taking the lead, the senior party leaders, including Members of Parliament and legislators, have passed on their targets of enrolling 50,000 members to their supporters.
Since the supporters and party workers have also been given direct targets, there is duplicacy of membership. The party workers are submitting similar list of members in their own account and to their leaders' account. A few similar incidents have come to fore and following this, the membership in-charge, Tapan Bhowmik, has asked the leaders to cross-check the list of members, before submitting it.
The supporters of senior leaders are facing the maximum of problems as they have dual responsibilities - first they have to complete their targets and later, achieve the targets of their leaders.
Since the local legislators play an important role in the party workers' appointment in ward or Mandal, they are passing on their targets to their supporters. Notably, the last date for the membership drive is March 31, but the leaders do not seem serious about it. The meetings related to membership drive are still on.
Bhowmik has also received complaints that in some cases only mobile numbers from which the number was called, have been mentioned in the list, but the verification SMS is missing from those numbers. He has asked the party workers to ensure that verification SMS is sent on the desired phone number.
