The flying squad of the Municipal Corporation of Gwalior has been accused of embezzling crores of rupees in the recovery of property tax. The case has reached the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) and the lokayukta. These two wings have started investigation in the case and sought detailed information from the Corporaiton.
The silence of the Municipal Corporation indicated unholy alliance. The municipal corporation administration had constituted a team for recovery of the property tax from big plots of more than 5000 square feet in the urban areas.
lokendra Singh Chouhan and Mahendra Sharma were made in-charge of team. A four-wheeler was available to the team to complete the target but the team embezzled the amount of recovery by issuing less receipt of recovering more tax. The complaint of recovering less tax from 236 people was made to the lokayukta and EOW.
When they demanded documents relating to tax recovery the Municipal Corporation Commissioner immediately removed Sharma and Chouhan from tax recovery wing. By that time crores of rupees had been recovered.
According to the information, Mahendra Sharma is a class III employee in the municipal corporation. The lokayukta and EOW have called for information about moveable and improvable property of last five years of Mahendar Sharma together with his income tax returns. In additional to this the SP EOW Anshuman Agrawal has ordered to keep both the employees away from the work of property tax recovery up to the completion of enquiry in to complaint no; 305/12.
