In order to make a move to stem the rot in the system, more than a dozen SHOs (TIs) serving in various police stations across the district have been transferred out of the district. The transfer orders came from the Police Headquarters, Bhopal last month as they had already served more than four years in one place.
However, currently there are quite a few police stations in the district without a real head as the replacements are yet to take charge while the transferred ones stay on waiting to handover charge. It is true that the transferred Inspectors come to the station and attend to duties but it is clear that their hearts are not in it as they know that have to leave at any time. Yashwant Goyal, one of the transferred Inspectors has got a stay from the court, and is waiting for reappointment. Needless to say, all this is affecting the law and order in a big and serious way. It is a fact that the city police have rarely succeeded in controlling, let alone reducing crime in the city, but the present scenario has added fuel to the fire. Data with the police department show that currently the percentage of unsolved cases is at an all-time high. These include murder, robbery, vehicle thefts and domestic violence. The performance of the city police in curbing crimes against women isn’t great either.
The transferred Inspectors are also worried about their children’s education, like getting admission in a good school and proper accommodation for their families. Such worries for the already overburdened police personnel will adversely affect their performance, and the authorities need to address this issue in sincere and constructive way.
One can only hope that things will improve over time. With enough men, proper training and sincere efforts law and order situation can certainly improve.
