The price hike in the rates of onions and tomatoes has become a nightmare for the buyers as well as the vendors. The citizens are suffering badly with the sudden spurt in vegetable prices.
The soaring prices of the vegetables have worried the citizens to an extent that they choose not to buy the vegetables. People now have to spend Rs 80 for a kilo to buy tomatoes and Rs 60 for a kilo to buy onions from the market.
According to the vegetable vendors of the city, the sales have dropped drastically. The vendors hence are worried and blame the lack in supplies and the Goods and Service Tax (GST) for the price hike.
Salman, a vegetable vendor of the city said, “The prices of onions and tomatoes have hiked from Rs 50 to Rs 60 per kg. Earlier during the winter season, all these vegetables were available at a very low rate. With the price hike, the supply of onions is going down drastically.”
“It is all because of the low supplies. The tomatoes never rate this much, but the lack of supplies is a major reason behind the price hike of tomatoes,” said another vendor Mahesh.
On the other hand, the consumers are unable to buy the vegetables at such high rates. The consumers urge the government to look into the matter and resolve it as soon as possible.
One of the consumers, Richa said, “Any dish is incomplete without an onion or a tomato, but the price hike is hindering us to buy the most important ingredient of our meal.”
Another buyer, said “We thought that the new government will bring positive changes but, nothing is being done till now. These issues are dealt with every year, but it is the responsibility of the government to handle it efficiently,” he added.
