The curfew in Gwalior that was imposed on Saturday following a clash between two groups during a procession, was lifted on Sunday after a meeting of the local peace committee, authorities said.
Notably, curfew was imposed in Gwalior city on Saturday after the indulgence of a Muharram procession in violence. Police had to resort to baton charge and tear gas to restore order.
According to the police, the passing of a Muharram procession in front of a Hindu religious site in Sevanagar area was opposed on Friday night, leading to a clash between members of both communities. Police intervened and brought the situation under control.
However, another spat took place on Saturday afternoon and led to heavy brick-batting between the two communities, leading to police using force to disperse the mobs.
Superintendent of Police Harinarayan Chari Mishra told The Pioneer that curfew was imposed in the area as a precautionary measure but the situation is now under control.
Seven people, including station house officer (SHO) of Gwalior police, sustained injuries while trying to settle the dispute which began over route for the procession at Sewa Nagar area. Police had to lob teargas shells to control the situation.
"We have imposed curfew in three areas in wake of rumours. Those involved in pelting stones would be identified and arrested," said Mishra. He said the situation is largely under control and appealed to all sections of people not to create panic. "More than 50 people trying to spread rumours and create trouble have been identified so far," he added.
