Curfew continues in violence-hit Barghat

Even as normalcy prevailed in Seoni district’s Barghat town following Monday’s communal violence, curfew continued on Tuesday. The situation is totally under control and due to precautionary measure, curfew has not been relaxed on Tuesday and the administration will consider relaxing curfew after reviewing the situation, Collector Bharat Yadav said.

Yadav said necessary action would be taken against rumour-mongers.  He also lauded common people for their cooperation in maintaining law and order situation.

Superintendent of Police RP Singh said adequate police forces were deployed to maintain peace.

The disturbance sparked off in Barghat on Monday morning following the death of a 45-year-old lohara village-resident leader Kapoorchand Thakre, of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), after he was assaulted by two youths in a road rage incident on Saturday.

Thakre was rushed to the Barghat Community Health Centre and subsequently referred to Nagpur where he succumbed at a private hospital on Monday.

As the situation descended into a downward spiral of chaos, Collector Bharat Yadav was left with no option but to clamp curfew on Monday at 3pm.

Meanwhile, Thakres last rites were performed in his ancestral village amid tight security arrangement last evening. Several local BJP leaders attended the funeral, the source said.
