Crimes against elderly on rise in Gwalior

Published on:

Panic has gripped the senior citizens and their relatives as there has been a significant rise in the gruesome crimes against the elderly people in the city as been reported in recent past.

As such, law and order has always been an issue in this city but the recent incidents of shocking attacks on the elderly, one after another has made the situation worse. The elderly people and their relatives now live in constant fear and feel insecure. Is the city safe for senior citizensIJ This is the big question that is haunting the police and the public alike these days.

On Tuesday, Munni Devi of Hajira was robbed on knife point in daylight. Two assailants entered her house around noon and demanded Rs 10000. When she expressed inability they threatened her with a knife before trying to choke her. While the elderly lady fell unconscious the attackers took cash and valuables and fled away. Earlier too, an elderly woman was beaten and valuables stolen from her house in the Hajira area of the city but the police are yet to make any headway in the case.

Talking to the media persons, Vikas Varma, nephew of Munni Devi said that there is no guarantee of security for elderly people in this city. He added that he is planning to move his family from the city as it is no longer safer for the public, especially the elderly ones.

There are scores of elderly people in the city who are forced to live alone as their children and relatives are settled elsewhere for jobs and other engagements. The police and the administration are yet to find some meaningful measures that will help these senior citizens and give them a sense of security.

These incidents highlight the need for stricter measures to ensure safety of elderly people. For that to happen, the police need to find time from their busy daily schedule of collecting fines and cutting challans for minor traffic offences.
