Tension soared in the Council meeting of the Gwalior Municipal Corporation after 30 Councillors, belonging to the ruling party and the Opposition stalled the proceedings of the Council meeting alleging that the Corporation has failed to supply drinking water to the citizens.
They added the Corporation has not only failed to address city’s water woes but has also failed to come up with any effective measures to deal with the severe crisis. During past three months of severe summer, the Corporation officials have been announcing alternate plans and arrangements for the supply of adequate drinking water, but the ground reality is far from satisfying with regular water cuts, occurring almost on a daily basis. They also said that the water level in the Tighara dam, the only fresh water reservoir in the city is alarmingly low.
The Opposition Councillors also alleged that the ruling party councilors are discriminating the areas and were supplying water in areas of their choice. This led to total pandemonium, forcing the speaker to adjourn the Council meeting for the day.
According to Councillor, Vandana Arora, the water tank in ward 53 has been without a pipe line for three years, resulting in long queues for water everyday.
Councillor Surjit Bhadouria said there has been no supply of water in his ward for the past three days as the motor in the pump house is defective.
He added despite repeated requests, the PHE officials have not done anything about it. At this point the speaker of the Council said that this is a serious matter and promised to look into it.
Opposition leader Krishnarav Dixit, Councillors Manoj Tomar, Dinesh Dixit, Jagadish Patel and Brajesh Gupta also spoke about the water crisis.
Despite an assurance by the speaker that the Municipal Commissioner will give a briefing about the water crisis and answer queries the councilors did not relent and the meeting got adjourned.
