Awareness regarding eye donation is increasing in the society. AIIMS Bhopal - Department of Ophthalmology has been at the forefront of such activities in central India under the visionary leadership of our Director Prof Dr Ajai Singh. Recently the eye department received 3 eyes and the corneal tissues were immediately utilized for transplantation in two patients.

Prof Bhavana Sharma, Head, Ophthalmology informed that, by employing latest surgical techniques, ensureutilization of a single corneal tissue for transplantation in multiple patients. This is possible because only the affected layer of the cornea is replaced by donated tissue.

The Hospital Corneal Retrieval Program was started by the Department of Ophthalmology, due to which 2 eye donations were received by Gopal Das and Sandeep Kumar Bhattacharya in the last 5 days.

Their relatives were motivated for eye donation by the eye bank team of AIIMS and got eye donation done. Donated corneas were transplanted to needy patients. A 60-year-old patient had Ulcer in the pupil of the eye for the last 2 weeks, due to which there was pus in the eye. For the treatment of this patient in AIIMS Hospital, the pupil of patient Omvati's eye was replaced. Another 25-year-old patient developed whiteness of the eye due to Herpes infection. For this, the patient was undergoing treatment for the last few years and was also taking medicines, but due to non-recovery, the doctor of AIIMS Hospital changed the membrane of the eye for the treatment of the patient.

The third 60-year-old patient had cataract, along with that the patient also had problems in the pupil of the eye. For the treatment of this patient in AIIMS Hospital, along with cataract operation, the membrane of the eye was also successfully replaced. AIIMS, Bhopal and the patients who have undergone eye transplant will always be grateful to all eye donors and their families.
