In view of increasing number of robberies and thefts, the traffic police are preparing to put unique number of the auto-rickshaws on the roads. The traffic police have decided to enforce numbering system for identification of auto drivers.
The unique number would be put on the autos at three places to indicate whether the driver taking the passengers is authorised or not. The police would have data of autos plying illegally. The police officers said that frequent complaints are being received about loot of passengers in the night at lonely places and misbehaviour with the women.
The victims do not remember the registration number of autos so they face problems in lodging complaints. The unique number on the autos would remain at three places on the yellow strip of autos so that the passengers can remember it.
After the incident, the passengers concerned would have to intimate the unique number to the police station so that the auto driver could be arrested. The auto union leader Mahaveer Kirar said the unique number is a good initiative. It would benefit the auto drivers and owners and identified the miscreants.
The DSP traffic Ajay Tripathi said that the number would be written on the glass of auto on the front left side and inside the auto as well as the behind the auto so that passengers could easily see them and remember. The route number would also be written front and behind of the auto.
The auto unique would be from 001 to 999. After that there would be Alfa numeric numbers. For getting the unique number, the owner and auto driver would have to reach the traffic police station with registration papers, insurance, fitness, driving licence, photo, anti-pollution certificate etc. Tripathi said that the work of writing of unique number would start after April 15.
