Congress unhappy with civic poll schedules

The Congress on Monday expressed its discontentment over the election schedules for urban bodies announced by the State Election Commission on Sunday stating that the two-phase elections were quite short for campaigning and expenditure would be much higher.

The Commission on Sunday announced that the urban bodies’ election would be held in two phases on November 28 and December 2. It further said that the nomination procedure for both the phases would be started from November 5, while the last date for filing the nomination is November 12.

In a letter sent to State Election Commission, Congress spokesperson JP Dhanopiya said that the last phase would get only four days for campaigning and their election expenditure would also be more. Dhanopiya said, “It would be justified if the contestants of both the phases get equal time for campaigning.”

Dhanopiya in a separate letter to the SEC also demanded to lodge complaint of violation of Model Code of Conduct (MCC) against the Chief Minister and Chief Secretary of the State.

“The MCC came into force on November 2 and despite being holiday on Sunday the State Government issued transfer orders of seven IAS and 62 SAS officers in order to affect the local body elections,” Dhanopiya said. He said that this act was a violation of the MCC and a case should be registered against the Chief Minister and Chief Secretary.
