The 130th formation day of the Congress party was celebrated with enthusiasm in Madhya Pradesh at the party’s State headquarters, Indira Bhawan. The Congress celebrations come in the backdrop of the party’s sliding base and its disastrous electoral performance this year.

At a function organised at the PCC office here on Sunday,  All India Congress Committee general secretary and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh, PCC Vice-president laxman Singh, Congress party functionaries and legislators, among others, paid homage to party’s stalwarts, hoisted party flag and distributed sweets. State Congress president Arun Yadav gives a miss to the foundation day celkebrations he was out of the state.

The Congress leaders also garlanded the portraits of national leaders and recalled their sacrifices for the country. Speaking on the occasion, the MPCC Vice-president laxman Singh reiterated that secularism was the main theory of the Congress and despite defeats the party would exist forever in the country. Singh hoped that Rahul Gandhi would become AICC President. The Congress leaders recalled the public welfare works done by the erstwhile Congress governments and that several leaders including Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi had sacrificed their lives for the country. The Congress party would continue it’s striving for social change in the country.

Congress has lost assembly polls thrice in a row in the state, while its performance in parliamentary and civic elections has also remained very poor. Serious deliberations have started in Congress about its ideological pull, connect with masses and form of organisation as the party enters its 131st year. The Indian National Congress was founded on this day in 1885, has seen its political fortunes dip this year. The first session of the party was held at Mumbai between December 28 and December 31, and was attended by 72 members.
