Cong MlAs sit on dharna in House over relief to farmers

Demanding immediate interim relief to the hailstorm-hit farmers of the State, the Congress legislators went on a sit-in in the well of the Assembly during the day-long special session of the House here on Tuesday. The dharna of the Congress members continued till filing of the report. The media was not allowed in the Assembly premises.

The leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly, Satyadev Katare, while talking to media persons in the Assembly, said, "We want result-oriented discussion over the plight of farmers of the State and are ready for it, be it taking any long. But the Chief Minister is doing politics over the issue and is not serious in resolving peasants' problems."

Katare further said that his party members would sit in the well of the House for whole night if the demand is not met with. Meanwhile, the ruling party MlAs and State BJP spokesman Vishwas Sarang said that the Congress is doing drama as it was known to the Opposition party that the farmers' issue was discussed under rule 130. This was decided in the business meeting of the House in the presence of Katare.

As per rule 130, the discussion has to be completed on the same day that too without voting over it.  Had this discussion been held under 139 then it would have been prolonged to another day and it must conclude with voting. The issueless Opposition is doing drama for politicising the issue, he added.

Notably, the Assembly's daylong session was called to pass the supplementary budget as the House was earlier adjourned sine die following ruckus by Congress members on the issue of MPPEB scam. Though the State's annual budget was passed by voice vote then, the Government was unable to present supplementary budget for rest of the financial year.
