The Congress was passing through a tough phase as the country was governed by those who were dividing the society and the country in the name of religion, said Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh here on Sunday.
Singh addressing the party workers at the State Congress headquarters on the occasion of the 130th Foundation Day of the party said, “The present time is challenging is for the Congress as the people of the country have voted such a party to power that is dividing the society and the country in the name of religion, caste and by inciting people against a particular religion.” Without disclosing any name of those running such campaign, Singh said that a false estimate was being given that the Muslim population was around 3 per cent in 1951 which escalated to 13 per cent now. He said that the Muslim population was 11 per cent in 1951.
He said that a convention of party workers would be called in March next year to take their feedback that how the lost grounds of the party could be recovered. Speaking on the occasion of 130th Foundation Day of the Congress party being celebrated at the state party headquarters here, he favoured people’s right to practice personal religious faith and propagate his religion.
“Following a long struggle, Congress brought freedom to the country (from the British rule). It is true that political fights followed but never any religious war occurred. Christian and Islamic religious preachers did visit India but they left too. India is known for its equality and respect for all religions. Congress party is against forceful religious conversions,” he said. On Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the senior Congress leader said Modi was a good event manager and orator but his speeches lacked content. Singh said Modi’s political future depended on how he got along with RSS and VHP in days to come.
