Cong desperate to win Balaghat seat from BJP

Madhya Pradesh’s Naxalism-affected Balaghat parliamentary constituency is bracing itself for a tough contest with the Congress desperate to wrest the constituency from the BJP, which has been in power here since 1998.

BJP strongman Gaurishankar Bisen wields a considerable influence in the constituency where caste equation plays a pivotal role in the selection of candidates and their ability to garner votes. The BJP has reposed faith in former legislator Bodh Singh Bhagat to maintain its stronghold. On the other hand, the Congress has fielded Hina Kawre.

Both the major parties are trying to make special efforts for wooing the tribal electorate. While Kawre has been promising to improve the standard of living of tribals if elected, Bhagat has indicated that the completion of railway projects would be his priority.

Balaghat would go to polls during the first phase of the three-phase elections in Madhya Pradesh tomorrow. Altogether there are 16 candidates in the fray, which includes Samajwadi Party's (SP) Anubha Munjare, who is posing a stiff challenge before the traditional rivals. Munjare had earlier given tough fight to Gaurishankar Bisen.
