With an aim to have zero tolerance where cleanliness is concerned the Gwalior Municipal Corporation has decided to crack the whip on erring sanitary workers.
It has been brought to the notice of the civic authorities many times that most of the sanitary workers donot report to duty on time resulting in garbage and filth getting accumulated in many areas of the city.
Taking a serious view of the matter and with the aim to upgrade the city’s ranking in the cleanliness survey, the Municipal Commissioner deployed officials concerned to verify the situation in various wards.
A head count was taken and it was found that the names of the sanitary workers were only on paper as many were hardly seen in several wards. It has been once again ascertained that the piling of garbage and the clogging of drains in many wards are the direct result of sanitation workers not turning up for duty for several days.
During the inspection tour of the Corporation Medical Officer, Satpal Singh Chauhan it was found that 21 workers were absent in ward no 29 and 60.
Chauhan immediately instructed the concerned officials to stop the payment of the absent workers. The Health Officer also told the Ward Health Officer to terminate the services of such workers who are habitual absentees.
It has also been come to the notice that most of the workers are on contract basis and they remain absent even while drawing wages. It is learnt that this is done in connivance with the WHO and the contractor.
A departmental enquiry has also been initiated against two WHOs, Dalveer More and Manoj Chauhan for negligence in duty. The Corporation has also decided to stop the salary increment of these ward officers for one year.
