Child cabinets in schools to empower children

Published on:

Formation of Child cabinets in schools is like an opportunity for children to speak out on issues which impact or matter to them. It is like voicing concern of children as they see it.

This is not only empowering children, but also increasing their own understanding on their own rights and shaping their personality. Good examples of this are seen at a Government school located Baxuwaha block of Chhattarpur district of the State.

In Dimarba village in Baxuwaha block of the district, gamblers use to do gambling at premises of this Government middle school. The act of gamblers was bringing disgrace to school and school teachers and villagers were not able to put an end to the problem.

Then child cabinet of school decided to take up the issue in their meeting and it was decided that children need to do something to end the problem. Child cabinet discussed problem with school students and decided to approach the gamblers.

“All children spoke to gamblers and said that their act was bringing bad name to school and leaving adverse impact on students. We said that even their children study in the school and whether they want that their children should see such bad atmosphere. The request had impact on gamblers, though initially their was resistance, but with help of our teachers, we could speak to people and they stopped gambling in the school,” said head of child cabinet, Vijay lodhi, a student of class 6 of the school.

Vijay shares about the activities child cabinet does. He adds that 'It is popularly known as Bal Panchayat. We took out rally in village to spread awareness of education and inspired those students to join back school who have stopped school in mid way. Many drop out children joined back the school'.

Government middle school of Sunwaha in Baxuwaha block was also facing problem of cleanliness and litter was in the school premises, causing problem to student. The child cabinet of students discussed the issue and approached local sarpanch. After meeting local sarpanch, their problem got solved.

In other words, introduction of child cabinet which has ministers like health minister, education minister, environment minister, reporter, discipline etc is making students to develop the decision making process and to decide on the issue and explore solutions of problems.
