With an aim to provide safety and hygiene for the patients, Hamidia hospital would be equipped with dedicated unit Central Sterilization Supply Department (CSSD). It would be the first CSSD across all the medical colleges of the state.

CSSD would have three units which would provide sterilization of equipments used at wards, emergency ward and labs. The equipments and tools used at different places in the hospitals would be sterilized at the CSSD and would be packed by an automated process after sterilization.

Around two years ago, DFID conducted an analysis of health services in Hamidia hospital with the support of Madhya Pradesh Technical Assistance Support Team (MP TAST) and in the analysis it was found that the tools and equipments used in the surgery were not in good condition. After which DIFD provided financial support to medical college through National Health Mission (NHM) besides UK Department of Foreign Investment and Development (DFID) also provided Rs71 lakh.

The chances of infection increase if the surgical equipments are not sterilized properly and would cause Septicemia, which is a bacteria in the blood (bacteremia) that often occurs with severe infections.

Superintendent of Hamidia hospital Dr DK Paul told that apart from Rs71 lakh provided by DIFD Rs85 lakh have been sanctioned for the establishment of the facility and once the construction works is completed equipments for CSSD would be purchased.

The objective of establishing a Central Sterile Supply Department is to make reliably sterilized items /articles available at the required time and place for any agreed purpose in the Hospital as economically as possible, having regard to the need to conserve the time of users especially Doctors And Nurses.

The Sterile Supply Department within a hospital receives stores, sterilizes and distributes to all departments including the wards, outpatient department [OPD] and other special units such as operation theatre [OT]. Major responsibilities of CSSD include processing and sterilization of syringes, rubber goods [catheters, tubing], surgical instruments, treatment trays and sets, dressings etc. it is also responsible for economic and effective utilization of equipment resources of the Hospital under controlled supervision.

The aim of CSSD is to provide sterilized material from a central department where sterilizing practice is conducted under conditions, which are controlled, thereby contributing to a reduction in the incidence of hospital infection and to provide a safe environment for the patients and staff.
