The CBI, investigating the Madhya Pradesh Vyapam scam and the deaths related to it on Friday registered a case of murder in the suspected death of Namrata Damor, whose body was recovered from railway track in Ujjain.

Besides, the CBI on Friday registered three more cases and preliminary investigation has been started in the death of TV journalist Akshay Singh, who had died in Jhabua, early this month. It was being stated that the journalist’s death was related to Vyapam scam.

Contrary to an earlier conclusion, the Madhya Pradesh police had reached on Namrata’s death, the CBI on Friday opted to consider it as a murder case and filed a case under Section 302 of the IPC against unidentified people. It was merely a few hours ago when the case diary related to Namrata was handed over to the CBI.

Twenty-year-old Namrata was found dead under mysterious circumstances near the railway track in Ujjain on January 7, 2012, more than a year after she cracked the pre-medical test (PMT) conducted by the Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board (MPPEB) or Vyapam. A student of MGM Medical College in Indore, her body was found days after she had left her hostel.

The first post-mortem examination conducted by a panel of doctors in Ujjain suggested that she died of asphyxiation and was murdered. However, a second opinion was sought and the Bhopal-based Medico legal Institute (MlI), a State Government body, carried out another post-mortem and came up with a contradictory report saying Damor had committed suicide and the case was closed.

All along, her family and whistleblowers have raised suspicion over the manner in which the case was closed and suspected that Damor was killed. The number of First Information Reports (FIRs) in the Vyapam scam has now reached nine. With regard to Pre-Medical Test 2010, two incidents have been registered and 12 people have been mentioned as accused, CBI sources added.

The new FIRs include the FIR pertaining to certain illegalities in the Pre-Medical Test-2010 and involves one named accused. The third FIR also concerns with the illegalities in the PMT-2010 that involves four accused. Seven other accused were added during investigation by the State police’s Special Task Force. With three more FIRs, the total number of cases registered by the CBI in connection with the scam has gone up to eight.
