Shukla to inaugurate cobalt unit for cancer treatment on Nov 1

Now, cancer patients of Vindhya region will not have to undertake rigorous journey to metropolitan cities for treatment. On the initiative of Energy, New and Renewable Energy, Mineral Resources and Public Relations Minister Rajendra Shukla facility of preliminary treatment of cancer will be available at Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital (SGMH) at Rewa.

Shukla will inaugurate cobalt unit for cancer treatment in the hospital on Madhya Pradesh Foundation Day, November 1. In deference to Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s wish, this treatment facility has been provided under public-private partnership (outsourcing). It will be brought on par with global level soon.

This arrangement is going to be boon for cancer patients of Vindhya region. Public Relations Minister Shukla had directed management of Rewa Medical College and Hospital to re-start its closed cobalt unit in a systematic way.

For this, an agency was selected which had experience to operate and maintain such a unit in Germany. M/s Asha Cancer Care Bhopal will invest, operate and maintain this facility.

Cobalt-60 machine imported from Canada was installed at Rewa medical college in 2002 for radio chemotherapy. The unit could not be operated due to absence of trained specialist doctors. Now, technicians trained or recognised by Bhabha Atomic Research Institute will treat cancer patients through this machine.

According to the hospital management, cancer treatment will start from December 15 to 25. Cancer treatment facility in Rewa medical college was included in State Government’s 100-day Action Plan.

Public Relations Minister Shukla has directed the medical college to hold cancer detection camps at tehsil level and ensure their treatment at primary level itself.
