Senior Congress leader and former leader of the Opposition in Madhya Pradesh Assembly Ajay Singh has alleged that Bundelkhand and Baghelkhand regions of the State have been suffering from drought but the Shivraj Singh Chouhan-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Government was busy in celebrating festivals.
Singh in a statement here on Sunday demanded that immediate relief be provided to the affected people and their power bills should also be waived. Singh said both the regions should be declared as drought-affected areas and demanded that the collection of loans should be withheld and electricity bills waived.
Claiming that peasants were being driven to suicide, Singh placed the ruling BJP on crosshairs for incurring an expenditure of Rs 100 crore in the name of Global Investors Summit and Agriculture festival and is not providing relief to drought-affected farmers.
Singh said, “Due to scanty rains Bundelkhand and Baghelkhand regions are suffering with wide scale drought. The farmers are disappointed and have left with no choice than to commit to suicide as the BJP government at the place of providing relief to them is busy in celebrations.” The self proclaimed farmer’s son chief minister does not have time to console the suffering farmers of the state, he added.
The senior Congress leader said that the government should start relief and rehabilitation works at the earliest in entire Bundelkhand and Baghelkhand. loan recovery should be stopped, power bills and lagaan should be waived. Survey should be carried out in both the regions and special relief package should be provided, he added.
