Bharatiya Janata Party State unit has demanded the Central Planning Commission to declare the Bargi dam project of Jabalpur district as a project of national importance and also to grant sufficient allocation to the state for national highways.

Raising these demands on Thursday, BJP State president Narendra Singh Tomar congratulated the people of the state for making a record in growth rate and tax collection in the 11th Five Year Plan.

"The Central Planning Commission has praised the people of the Sate for recording a growth rate of 9.7 per cent in the plan period which is significantly ahead of the national growth rate. Besides, it has also expressed satisfaction over a large collection of revenues form the state," Tomar said on Thursday.

He said that the Centre should seriously consider declaring the Bargi project as a national project keeping in view its importance in boosting growth in the region. Further, he also remarked that the Central government should effectively define its role in construction, development and maintenance of the national highways.

"The task of developing the national highways should be given a very high priority in the 12th Five Year Plan. It is essential for giving a thrust to economic development of the country," Tomar said.
