BJP, Cong wooing MlAs for RS poll

Published on:

Both major political parties Congress and BJP are out to woo the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and independent legislators in the run for Rajya Sabha election scheduled on June 11.

There are four MlAs of BSP and three independents who would play an important role in the election of third seat for which Congress has fielded Vivek Tankha, while with BJP’s support Vinod Gotiya is contesting as an independent.

The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) on Saturday issued a whip announcing its support for Congress candidate in Rajya Sabha polls in Madhya .

The Congress party's claims over one of the Rajya Sabha vacancies from Madhya Pradesh received a shot in the arm on Saturday with BSP Supremo Mayawati announcing that her MlAs will support the Congress candidate in the upcoming polls on June 11. The BSP has 4 MlAs in the 230 member MP assembly and their vote was being seen as crucial ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections on June 11. The Congress was one vote short of securing the Rajya Sabha seat.

Mayawati in a statement from lucknow on Saturday said that to weaken the communal forces it would support the Congress in the Rajya Sabha polls to be held in MP for three seats on June 11.

After the last day for withdrawal of nominations expired on Friday and nobody withdrew nomination, it was clear that the final decision would be taken through voting on June 11.

In all there are four candidates in the fray for three posts- MJ Akbar and Anil Madhav Dave, Vivek Tankha and Vindo Gotiya. It would be smooth sailing for Akbar and Dave in favour of the BJP, while the Congress nominee Tankha is likely to face tough competition from Gotiya.
