The corridors of the Primary Wing of Billabong International School were abuzz with activity. Nervous energy and excitement was in the air as budding actors of Grades 1 – 4 reverberated Shakespeare’s famous quote by acting out their favourite literary characters in the Inter House Characterization Competition.
Dressed in vibrant costumes and armed with fitting props these little artists played out a wide array of characters as diverse as the Red Queen and Alice from Alice in Wonderland, Tom Sawyer, Swami from Swami and Friends, Charlie and Wonka from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, Wormwood, Wormwood, Honey and Trunchbull from Matilda and many more.
The vibrant costumes coupled with eloquent dialogues created a perfect blend between their original style and the shades of the characters they were playing. The participants seemed to be brimming with pride as they were representing their respective Houses and winning would not be a mere personal achievement but would bring valuable points and glory to the House they represent.
The characterization brought a three-dimensional perspective to the learning process adhering to the three learning approaches – visual, auditory and Kinesthetic. It was also an invaluable lesson in building confidence and articulation, performing in front of an audience.
The event was a landmark also because it was the first time that student judges, well-versed and trained intensely in Dramatics were given an opportunity to act as judges for the Grades 1 and 2 event, accentuating our belief in the abilities of our students.
