Bhopal youth falsely linked to Kashmir incident in viral tweet

A misleading social media post from a now-deactivated X (formerly Twitter) account named “Random Sena” triggered a night of heightened tension for Bhopal Police, after it falsely linked a local youth to a violent incident in Pahalgam, Kashmir. The tweet, which quickly gained traction online, featured a photograph of the individual and claimed he was the mastermind behind the killing of innocent civilians in Kashmir.

The post also tagged the Bhopal Police Commissioner, prompting immediate intervention.

Acting swiftly, authorities traced the individual shown in the viral image and detained him during the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday. He was identified as Zeeshan Ali, a resident of Kohefiza, Bhopal. His mobile phone was seized, and a detailed forensic examination of its contents was initiated.

Zeeshan was subjected to nearly five hours of interrogation while police meticulously reviewed digital data and investigated the veracity of the claims made in the post. Following a comprehensive inquiry, officers concluded that there was no evidence linking Zeeshan to any criminal activity or the Kashmir incident. His phone also yielded no incriminating material.

On Wednesday morning, Zeeshan was released from custody. The Bhopal Police later issued an official statement via their verified Twitter handle, confirming that Zeeshan had no connection to the incident in Pahalgam and was found to be completely innocent.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by misinformation on social media and the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in responding to viral content that can unfairly malign individuals and escalate public anxiety.

Authorities have reiterated the importance of responsible social media usage and warned that legal action may be taken against those spreading false information.
