A Hindi play narrating the tale of woman’s status in society ‘Basant Bahar’ was staged here on Friday at Shaheed Bhawan Auditorium.
Directed by renowned playwright of the city Balendra Singh, the play was staged as a part of 13th Rang Alap Theatre Festival 2014. The play was splendidly performed by Hum Theatre Group, Bhopal.
The play Basant Bahar is a story of a girl Basant. Her life turned upside down when she became a victim of molestation when she was a teenager. The story begins five years after the crime and now Basant is married and leading a peaceful life with her husband. As the destiny plays games on her, Basant’s life again turns upside down when the accused Charan sends a marriage proposal to Basant. This leads Basant into a turmoil of incidents that happens when Charan comes back to her life.
But it was not only the surprises that destiny planned for Basant. Another admirer of Basant named Chameli who is a she-male wants to marry Basant and for this he can go to any extent. Basant is stuck in the whirlpool of bad life situations. As she is trying to deal with them, Chameli on the other hand tells Rakesh, Basant’s husband that Basant is still in love with Charan. Provoked by Chameli, Rakesh in turn asks Basant to move out of his life and house and never return. With this Chameli’s plan was a success. Basant was being misused in the name of respect in society and as a result her parents also do not accept her as she was thrown out of her husband’s house and this has ruined their position in society.Basant was left to lead her life on her own bearing the hardships and struggle all alone. Dealing with the current situation and a heart touching concept, the play was worth watching. The sensible use of music at each situation was commendable and the matured acting skills of the artists added more impact in the presentation. It was a heart-melting performance for the Bhopalites.
