Banned: Open sale of tranquilisers by medical shops

Published on:

From now onward, no medical shop in the district will sell tranquilisers and other such medicines without prescriptions of the registered medical practitioners.

District collector and judicial magistrate in this regard issued a prohibitory order under section 144 of the CrPC, prohibiting open sale of tranquilisers by the medical shops. Violation of the order will invite disciplinary action against such medical shops.

Giving reasons for open sale of these tranquilisers at the medical shops, the collector in his ruling has stated that investigation of various major crimes that have been taking place in the city, has revealed that in majority of these crimes, the accused committed crimes under the influence of these tranquilisers.

Moreover, it has also been observed that these tranquilisers are being sold by the medical shops across the district in flagrant violation of the norms and without prescriptions of the registered medical practitioners, the ruling said adding that in

majority of cases, tranquilizers are consumed by accused to commit crimes, while on the other hand it is also

given rise to various health problems.

Collector said this fresh ruling will help check growing incidents of crime. The ruling will come to effect from May 21, 2015 and remain so till July 18, 2015. During this period any violation of the ruling will invite disciplinary action against the accused under

section 188 of the Indian

Penal Code.

Notably, this is for the first time in any district of the State, where such orders were issued against sale of tranquilisers. The prohibitory orders remain in use for three months and later, the orders needs to be re-issued.
