The Hindustani Classical Ragas wrapped with the mild rhythms was all about the first day of Badal Raag 2014 held here on Friday at Antarang Hall, Bharat Bhawan.

The cultural hub of the city is being embellished with a four-day classical event 'Badal Raag 2014'. Badal Raag is all about classical songs, music and dance being convened, under Anhad department Bharat Bhavan. The programme began from Friday and would conclude here on September 8.

The opening eve of the show was adorned with Dhrupad Gayan by the students of Dhrupad Institution, Bhopal. The students performed six different compositions on stage which enthralled the audiences a lot. The students received enormous appreciation by the audiences as they presented their performance of different classical ragas. Notably, Dhrupad was a dominant form of vocal music in northern India until the eighteenth century, when it was gradually overtaken by the lighter, more florid vocal style as 'Khayal'.

The students gave a customary full performance of Dhrupad, which is divided in two parts- the Alap, an extended melodic improvisation that explores the mood of Raga, and the Dhrupad, a composition set to distinct poetic text. The students of the Dhrupad institution are trained by Gundecha Brothers, classical Dhrupad performers of the city. They began their performance with Raga Megh Malhar, followed with Alap, Jhor Jhala. Further they performed Raga Miyan Malhar, followed with a

composition under the same raga and wrapped their show with an Alap.
