In a decision taken on Thursday, the University Grants Commission (UGC) conferred ‘Autonomous Status’ on Bhopal School of Social Sciences, the reputed college in the State capital affiliated to Barkatullah University.
College publicity officer Aamir Mahboob told that the UGC has granted ‘Autonomous Status’ to the BSSS college for a period of six years from session 2013-14 to 2018-19.
“Getting autonomous status from UGC has distinct benefits. Now, the college will be free to decide about the admission procedure independent of the university’s schedule. It will also have the authority to chalk out its own examination schedule and set its own question papers. This is a great relief as now we would be able to complete our sessions in time without any delay that had adversely affected academic sessions earlier,” he said.
He also informed that the college would now be able to change nearly one-fourth of the syllabus of the courses that are taught. “This would give us an opportunity to introduce innovative themes and topics to make the courses more relevant for students,” he said.
The college which was established in 1972 has eight departments with graduate and post-graduate courses. It has strength of nearly 3000 students and 70 full-time teachers. The college also offers an International MBA through collaboration with Assumption University of Bangkok.
Notably, the college was accredited with a grade ‘A’ by National Assessment and Accreditation Council in 2006 for maintaining high academic standards.
In February 2012, it was re-accredited with grade ‘A’ for its exemplary performance.
