Aspirants' concern over new NEET exam rules

Published on:

This is good news for those who have already appeared in medical entrance examination of the National Eligibility -cum-Entrance Test (NEET) or other tests earlier, that they will also have three chances counting from NEET 2017, irrespective of the number of times  they had attempted in the past in any test, according to the latest rule.

This new rule follows the MCI’s recent surprise decision to limit number of chances to three from this year as also to impose an age cap at 25 years.

However, the freshers have a grouse that those who had attempted several times in the past and are experienced are getting three more chances alongwith them which would affect the latter’s prospects since their chances are limited to three. That is to say, the fresh , new entrants will sit with the experienced ones, especially with an unprecedented age limit of 25 years coming into effect without any warning.

The aggrieved section complains that this exam would be more like a nightmare for the fresh candidates.

Earlier, it was notified by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) that the candidates who have already availed permissible three attempts will not be allowed to appear in NEET 2017.

later, the Department of Health and Family Welfare Government of India through their official letter communicated that the Medical Council of India (MCI) clarifies that attempts made by candidates prior 2017 will not be counted. It was also clarified that NEET 2017 will be counted as the first attempt for the candidates irrespective to their previous attempts in AIPMT/NEET.

The fresh candidates however are unsatisfied with this notice. According to them, this is unfair on their part.

One candidate, Kartikya Pandey said, “For me this is totally unfair. I think that this decision will hammer our preparations and studies. As those who have already exhausted with their three attempts have a clear view of the exam pattern and question papers.”

Another first timer, Deepak Shah, says that those candidates appearing in NEET 2017 after their earlier three attempts have a strong preparation. “We have our classmates who are giving NEET for the fourth time they have already experienced the examination thrice. For us it is going to be very tough.

On the contrary, two or three-year drop-outs are happy over the decision.Tanvi Datta (name changed), one of the candidates ,is a three-year drop-out. Expressing her concern over the decision said, “I am really happy that the CBSE has given us another chance. This year it went all confusing with the notification saying that NEET 2017 will not allow candidates to appear for test after three attempts. But, now I am really thankful to the CBSE for considering our case.” Notably, the examination is conducted by the CBSE every year for the students seeking admissions in MBBS and BDS courses.

While talking on the similar issue, President of Indian Medical Association Madhya Pradesh, Dr Pradeep Sinh Chandel told ‘The Pioneer’ ,‘“This was not reported earlier and many students already began preparing for NEET 2017. Keeping their case in view, the decision has been taken. From now on the candidates will be given a chance of three attempts and NEET 2017 will be counted as their first attempt.” According to Dr Chandel this will not affect the preparations of fresh candidates. “I don’t think so it will affect their studies or their preparations. In my view it’s a fair chance given to all.” The CBSE is now inviting online applications. The last date for online application is March 1. The exam will be on May 7.
