Published on:

leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly Ajay Singh has urged the State Government to immediately appoint a full-time chairman for the State Human Rights Commission. In a letter to the Commission, he expressed gratitude towards the National Human Rights Commission for issuing notice to the State Government for the death of two newborns during delivery in Tikamgarh district hospital.

Singh said that in Madhya Pradesh at the State Human Rights Commission, there is no full-time chairman and thus the citizens of the State are facing problem in getting protection of the Commission. In the letter, Singh stated that such an incident was reported from district hospital and this indicates as how sensitive the governance system in Madhya Pradesh.

There have been several instances, when human rights of the citizens of the State have been violated in absence of full-time chairman, he said, adding that due to this, in few cases, the national Commission had to take cognizance directly to protect the human rights. These cases included, detrah of 116 children due to malnutrition in Sheopur, death of 11 patients in Indore’s MY hospital due to obstruction in oxygen supply, drought situation in Bundelkhand and forcing nursing students in Ratlam to prostitution.

Singh stated that in want of full-time chairman, the citizens of Madhya Pradesh are deprived of their constitutional rights. In past four months, more than 100 farmers have committed suicide and on June 6, 2017, in Mandsaur, innocent agitating farmers were gunned down by police. However, till date, no FIR has been registered. Singh stated that as per rules, there are provisions of opening fires only in emergency and that too below the waist, but the police personnel violated the rules.
