Bharat Bhavan is hosting a solo show of pastel drawings by Regine Hamsun from Norway, who has had several solo and group shows internationally. The show ‘Anarchy of the Imagination’ opened on Tuesday at 6 pm under the aegis of Rupabh, Bharat Bhavan. The show will remain open till November 8, 2015.

The exhibition consists of a series of drawings; pastel on paper. The drawings are a result of processes of dissolution and becoming, triggered and inspired by geographical movement and relocation from the big city to the small town where Regine Hamsun presently lives, and recent travels to India and Egypt.

Geographical relocation made it possible for me to work more freely and uninterrupted, almost a fresh start. She has been examining the pre-articulated and the preliminary, the intuitive and spontaneous, the pure and playful experience of form and light. There is an implicit and intense sense of freedom for me in working on paper: Its sheer physicality is so light, tactile and versatile- almost flirty.

Regine Hamsun is a distinguished visitor and guest from Norway. Several years ago, she was visiting Varanasi with her husband Knut Felberg. They were contemplating making Varanasi

their second home, splitting time between Norway and India. They were also supporting a special school in the city run by an acquaintance of theirs, one lalla.

Having asked him if the school libraryhad Hindi translations of her grandfather Knut Hamsun’s books (The 1920 NobelPrize winner) and having found out that the school library did nothave these books,

Regine began to look for the books online. She soon madecontact with Teji Grover, who is currently based in Bhopal, and is a well knownHindi poet (also a painter), who has had a long association with Bharat Bhavan. She found that it was Teji Grover who had translated Knut Hamsun into Hindi.
