An emboldened Cong in straight fight with BJP

In the run-up to the 2018 Assembly elections, the BJP and the Congress, the two main rivals, are engaged in a pitched political battle in the district. Much is at stake as the BJP and the Congress are in direct contest in most of the constituencies.

A united Congress is taking on the might of the BJP as the saffron party seeks a fourth term.

The BJP, with its slogan, ‘Abki baar 200 paar’ is expressing confidence that it will retain power in the state. Many party leaders have been ascertaining that the saffron party will secure more than 200 seats on the basis of its hard work and developmental measures, besides the performance of its government in the state.

But there are indications that the Congress is likely to unseat the BJP from power in the state. Many of the opinion polls give an edge to the Congress in the state.

However, political experts opine that a minor swing in votes can turn the tide in the favour of either of the two parties due to a very small difference between their projected vote shares.

It is in this backdrop that the candidates in Gwalior district are going all out to woo voters. A majority of the candidates from both parties assisted by their family members, friends and supporters were seen going from door to door in their respective constituencies beseeching votes. It seems the aspirants have more faith in making door-to-door contact with the voters than in public meetings and demonstrations.

They are also using social media as well to reach out to their supporters and voters in the district. Many candidates have come out with their manifestoes for the development of their constituencies listing priorities ranging from water and parking problems to better job opportunities and health facilities.

Narain Singh Kushwaha, the BJP candidate from Gwalior South, during his visit to the constituency wards assured the citizens of better arrangements for shifting the garbage from the area. He also apprised the public about the various developmental works of the BJP government. Earlier the locals had complained to the candidate that no cleaning is done in their area.
