Being in the eyes of every writer, director and producer these days, the Bhopal city has also produced great artists who have built a golden fortune for themselves in the Bollywood industry. One of the names is of the writer turned director Rumi Jaffery. This Bhopalite has made it large in the Bollywood film industry. He has been in the industry for a long time and has worked with many experienced producers and actors of the industry.
While he was here in the city to attend a private family function this week, he discussed about his journey and struggles to make it big in the industry with The Pioneer. Having worked with the big names like Salman Khan, Big B Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Ajay Devgan, Akshay Kumar and Govinda, the Bhopalites Rumi Jaffery began his career with the theatre industry.
While talking to The Pioneer, Rumi said, “I always wanted to make it big in life and basically in the B’town. I knew that if I have to make my dream come true I have to step in the city called ‘city of dreams’ Mumbai. In the initial years of my career, I faced a lot of struggle.” Rumi said, “Initially to know that I am a writer people used to laugh at me and comment that this is just not enough to achieve what I aspire for. As I was young I had the courage to get what I want so I continued with the theatres. As the time passed by people understood my talent and I got my first film as a writer Payaal in year 1992. From then with the grace of God I haven’t turned back.”
On asking about, direction, he said, “Everybody wants to achieve something in life and want to move forward. So I was suggested by Amitabh Sahab and Aishwarya to look up for the direction. Still it took time for me to think about it, and then I did my first movie as a director, life Partner in year 2009 with Govinda.”
Recently, Rumi has written and directed the movie Gali Gali Chor Hai in 2012 with Akshay Khanna that was shot in Bhopal. “If I get a chance I would love to shoot my each upcoming movie in Bhopal, but the scrip should have a demand (said laughingly).” Rumi has worked on many comedy scripts and now is recently working on a thriller that would be announced soon. He also said that he is going to team up with Amitabh Bachchan once again. There is more to come in the way of writer-director’s life to add on to his success list.
