Describing the gang-rape of a Swiss tourist in Datia District on Friday, as unfortunate, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Monday said all efforts are underway to check sexual offences.
“Instead of citing an excuse, the regime will provide security to domestic and foreign tourists. A mechanism shall be evolved to prevent recurrence of such incidents,” he told mediapersons in the State Assembly premises after the House was adjourned for the day following the main opposition Congress’ demand for Home Affairs Minister Uma Shankar Gupta’s resignation in the wake of the Datia incident.
Six accused were arrested in connection with the rape and stringent action would be initiated against them if found guilty, the Chief Minister said while claiming that the Government is serious about maintaining law and order and adding that in the recent past culprits were promptly brought to book in cases of crime against women.
In the past three months, six rapists were awarded capital punishment while 22 were sentenced to life terms and 19 to 10 years’ imprisonment. Efforts would continue to ensure effective action in such cases.
Referring to the Congress ruckus in the House over the Datia incident, Chouhan said, “We are ready to discuss it but they are attempting to politicise the matter. The Congress’ stance on the issue is not positive. If a discussion had taken place then we could have taken a decision after listening to their valuable suggestions.”
